Castle Crashers may be one of the best 2D side-scrolling multiplayer beat’em ups ever made.

Castle Crashers is a 2D side-scrolling beat’em up with a fantastic art style. On each level, your character starts on the left side of the screen and reaches his destination by travelling to the right. Along the way, he’ll encounter enemies to vanquish and obstacles to overcome.

Better yet, Castle Crashers features co-operative multiplayer, and up to four people can play at a time. The game is pretty good with just two people but at its best with four. The co-op gameplay is quite good, and teams often have to work together to take down bosses and clear other hurdles.

Another aspect that makes Castle Crashers work as well as it does are the RPG elements. There are more than 25 unique characters to unlock plus the four starting knights. Each of these can be leveled and equipped individually. There are more than 40 weapons to collect, and leveling a character lets you upgrade strength, agility, magic, defense and so forth. The game also features companions in the form of animal orbs, and these can provide each character additional abilities and perks.

Castle Crashers features a number of different game modes. Campaign mode challenges either one to four players to complete the story mode. Yes, the game is soloable, but it can be quite the challenge. Insane mode takes Campaign mode to an insane level, naturally, and arena modes pits players and even entire teams against one another for bragging rights.

There’s not much to complain about with Castle Crashers. It’s a great game, and it’s good enough and diverse enough that you may keep playing it for a long time to come. Even five years after release, the multiplayer community was still hopping, and that’s saying something. There is some DLC. These are generally cosmetic packs priced at around a dollar, so it’s nothing too offensive.
